[Above/Right: The view from our balcony on Tuesday (25th September). This is how it would remain for the next 3 days!]
For those of us who were (un)fortunate enough to have been here in 1999 - we had encountered this once before... or had we? This was unarguably the worst 'flood' that Lake Town had ever seen. Till date, the majority of the lanes that comprise this township are still water-logged. I consider myself extremely fortunate that we seem to be out of this mess for the present.
Left: En route to work! The rickshaw was a lifesaver during these trying times...
Right: The normally 'hyperactive' VIP Road is deserted due to protests and road-blocks courtesy the residents of Bangur (Photo --> from atop the Lake Town-Salt Lake foot-bridge)
Left: Tread carefully! The lake (adjacent to VIP Road) had spilt over and was one with the street...
Right: Lake Town-VIP Road crossing - Rickshaws ferry their passengers sans belongings to (relative/temporary) safety...
Left: "Pump fiction"? News channels and men in white, spotless clothing kept monotonously announcing that 'steps were being taken', but alas! There was nothing in sight... until Thursday evening. Till then, the pump was just a myth. Finally, on Thursday night, the water was slowly transported into the Keshtopur canal. This would be a daily activity for the next few days...
Right: Thursday night - VIP Road is cordoned off as the water is pumped into the Keshtopur canal from Lake Town.
Soon, all the water will subside and then the only thoughts in our minds will be those of the festive months ahead. The newspapers that carried the woes of a thousand-odd citizens will be 'recycled' by then; the media will have 'other' news. This 'issue' will soon be shoved under a carpet and 'forgotten'... till the rains return!
Complete the series: 1999, 2007, ....?

We're still sinking sinking, and not enough drinking water :(
Excellent narration with appropriate photographs. Well done We have seen & suffered in 1999 & 2007. We only hope that these horrified experience will not repeated !
seriously, what u said was asolutely correct.and i should say that u did a fantastic job.the first thing i did was to save that webpage on my system,I want to show them to my parents.even i took few photos with my N70 camera, which i hope to keep as memorabilia of this flood.my flat is located on the ground floor of my apartment and it was in waist deep water.i consider myself lucky that i could escape from lake town on time.
well although Saltlake wasn't really that badly affected this time...thats really no big consolation cuz the way things r going we cud be witnessing similar scenes very soon...
i'm sure the authorities hav already forgotten abt this...after all their work is done...water pumped out...muck cleared up...n things r back to "normal" as they say!!
have also been hearing pathetic stories from my maid servant...who lives in Keshtopur...her family and numerous others like her have had whatever little belongings they have damaged by this flood...people living in one room shanties obviously don't hav any higher ground to stow away their stuff...
all over kolkata we hav swanky new apartment blocks coming up...hotel,malls,mutliplexes we have it all...what we don't have is the basic amenities...n since noone's really too bothered about that...we can look forward to more "water water evrywhere not a drop to drink" situations in the future..sigh...
Sir, Do not worry, even here in GDL we encounter the same situation once or twice. :) But of course the clearing of water by PUMP FICTION is much faster.
ha ha ha dada, what a narration.
gud going!cheers to u a!u people were really in a mess.well nice photographs!
Rupai.
Hmmm....awesome snaps....and very "real" too!!! Fortunately, the area around my home [Jadavpur] is devoid of water logging, so my condition was not as worse. But yeah...travelling to and fro office was a big torture!!! When I was small....I used to be jealous of ppl who experienced water logging in their areas, and wished that atleast for a day I would have to walk through knee deep water in order to reach home. But now...I feel alarmed at the thought of my past longing...and feel relieved that my wishes hadn't been answered then!!! :-o
